Privacy Policy

Who We Are
Detent is operated by IllogicalProject Production (Brian Fenn). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights under applicable privacy law including GDPR and CCPA.
Lawful Basis for Processing
We process your personal data on the basis of performance of a contract — specifically, to operate the Detent service you signed up for. Without your email address, user ID, and cabinet data, we cannot authenticate you or save your coffees. We have no other lawful basis for processing; we do not rely on consent (beyond what Apple and Google present during sign-in) or legitimate interests for any data collection. What We Collect
Account data: When you sign in, we receive your name and email address from Apple or Google. We store your selected grinder and, if you connect your Fellow machine, your Fellow account credentials (email and password).
Cabinet data: Coffee cabinet entries you save — names, origins, roast levels, flavor notes, brew profiles — and thumbnail photos captured during label scans.
Scan telemetry: When you scan a coffee label, we record operational data to monitor scan quality: your device model, iOS version, app version, camera ISO and brightness reading, whether the precheck passed or blocked, and how long the scan took. This data is linked to your account and is used only to detect quality regressions and improve the scan experience. It is not used for advertising.
What We Do Not Collect
We do not collect a password for your Detent account. We do not collect payment information. We do not use advertising trackers or sell your data to any third party under any circumstances. The website companion (detent.illogicalproject.com) uses Google Analytics to measure aggregate page traffic; this is not tied to your Detent account and is configured without advertising features.
How We Use Your Data
Your data is used solely to deliver the Detent experience: identifying coffee from label photos, generating personalised brew recommendations, and syncing brew profiles to your Fellow machine. Scan telemetry is used to monitor and improve scan reliability. Your Fellow credentials are stored with row-level security and are transmitted only to the Fellow cloud API at the time of a sync request. They are never returned in any API response or logged anywhere.
Third-Party Services
Detent uses the following services to operate. Each has its own privacy policy.
Supabase — secure database and file storage (supabase.com/privacy). Anthropic Claude — AI-powered label reading and recipe generation (anthropic.com/privacy). Fellow Products — machine sync via Fellow cloud API (fellow.products). Vercel — app hosting (vercel.com/legal/privacy-policy). Google Cloud — backend processing (cloud.google.com/terms/cloud-privacy-notice). Google Analytics — aggregate web traffic measurement on the website companion (policies.google.com/privacy).
We do not share your personal data with any other third parties.
Camera and Image Data
The app requests camera access only to scan coffee bag labels. Each captured frame is sent over an encrypted connection to our server for AI analysis. The raw image is not stored after analysis completes. Thumbnail images saved to your cabinet are stored in your private Supabase Storage bucket and are accessible only to your authenticated account.
Data Retention
Your account data is retained for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete account in the app. Deletion removes all cabinet entries, brew profiles, thumbnails, Fellow credentials, scan telemetry, and your account record. You can also request deletion by emailing hello@illogicalproject.com; we will complete it within 30 days.Security
All data is encrypted in transit using TLS and encrypted at rest. Database access is protected by row-level security policies so your data is accessible only to your authenticated session. Fellow credentials are stored in an isolated column and are never returned in client-facing API responses.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
Access — receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you. Correction — ask us to fix inaccurate data. Erasure — delete your account and all associated data (available in-app or by email). Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format. Objection — object to processing where we rely on legitimate interests (we currently do not, but you retain this right).
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@illogicalproject.com. We will respond within 30 days.
Children
Detent is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with data, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy. When we do, we will revise the date at the top of this page. Continued use of Detent after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
